Instructions for connecting to the IRC server

You will need:

  • A computer
  • An IRC Client (software) or web browser
  • An Internet Connection

What is IRC?
Internet Relay Chat. A live chat area of the Internet in which real-time conversations among two or more people take place via special software. Each specific IRC channel begins with a # and is dedicated to a different area of interest. IRC is considered another part of the technology of the Internet the same way FTP, Telnet and the Web are. Connecting to the IRC Server
Step 1: Download an IRC Client. (See below for Alternate Instructions using only a web browser.)

  • We have used IceChat7, which is free, open source, and has an active support forum.
  • mIRC is probably the best known IRC client, but it is no longer free. It's been around a long time and it works very well.
  • Other IRC Clients can be found on sites such as http://www.download.com

Step 2: Install the Client Software.

  • Our instructions will apply to IceChat. Refer to the documentation for your specific client if you choose another application.

Step 3: Set up the New Server

  • In the toolbar at the top of the application, choose Server List | Add Server
  • In the Server Name box, type irc.tarotforlife.com, then click Next
  • The port number should be 6667, click Next
  • For channel, type in #tarotforlife, then click Next
  • For nickname, type in the nickname you want to use, then click Next
  • Leave the AutoPerform window blank, click Next
  • You can review your choices in the next box, click Next to finish

Step 4: Connecting
The new server should now be in your list of Favorite Servers on the left side of the application. Double-click the irc.tarotforlife.com server in the list to connect to it.

  • If you did not set an autojoin channel during setup, once connected to the server, you can join the channel by typing /join #tarotforlife

Alternate Instructions using a Web Browser
If you don't wish to download separate software to connect to our IRC chat, there are web pages that allow you to connect to our chatroom.

The information you will need to connect are:

  1. Nickname you wish to use
  2. Server name: irc.tarotforlife.com
  3. Port number: 6667
  4. Room to join: #tarotforlife

Please note that web-based methods of connecting may not have all the features/functionality that a separate chat client would, but it is very simple to use.

Voila!
You have successfully made a connection to the #tarotforlife channel on our server. The room is open for your use at any time. This is a full-featured chat with smilies, whisper windows, IRC commands, and it is lightening fast with no server lag.
